Gulu, April 3, 2024

In alignment with its strategic goals, the University of the Sacred Heart Gulu (USHG) continues to elevate its research and community engagement efforts. The university is focusing on local challenges and sustainable development through innovative research projects that benefit the community. One standout project is by Dr. Herbert Mutumba (BVM, MA, PGD SML), a recent graduate of the Postgraduate Diploma in Strategic Management and Leadership program in the Faculty of Management Science and the Regional Manager, Diary Development Authority(DDA) Northern Region. His study titled, Creating Value in Dairy: A Study of Small-Scale Milk Processing Firms in Gulu, explores the challenges faced by small-scale milk processors in the northern region of Uganda, specifically in Gulu. Dr. Mutumba's study is based on the concepts in Harvard Professor Michael Porter's Value Chain Model. According to Dr. Mutumba,Milk processing firms in Gulu face stiff competition from over 120 processing firms nationwide as well as from alternative beverages like soda, which calls for them to innovate and enhance their value propositions in order to deliver products that will continuously meet customers' expectations. Dr. Mutumba's study aims to help these firms improve their operations and profitability of their milk processing enterprises. The findings of his study underscore the importance of addressing key issues such as human resource competencies, equipment availability, and reliable sources of supplies in the dairy industry.

His research ties into USHG's Strategic Goal 3, which aims to create knowledge for a better world. This goal includes developing research capacity, engaging students and staff in tackling societal problems, and providing top-notch research training. Additionally, through projects like Mutumba's, USHG is making a real difference in the community, bridging the gap between theory and practice better future. USHG's efforts also align with Strategic Goal 4, which focuses on engaging in community service, uplifting the underprivileged, and providing opportunities for graduates.

As the University of the Sacred Heart Gulu continues on this path of impactful research and community engagement, projects like Mutumba's serve as stimuli of change and hope, driving sustainable development and positive transformation in Northern Uganda and beyond. According to Mr. Robinson Otim, the Dean of the Faculty of Management Science, “By providing students with opportunities to engage in meaningful research projects that address real-world challenges, USHG is nurturing a culture of innovation and inquiry that transcends the classroom...We are positive that the study's findings will inform interventions that support the sustainability and growth of local dairy processing facilities, ultimately contributing to the economic development of the region.” Through strategic research efforts, USHG is positioning itself as a leader in driving sustainable development and value creation in Northern Uganda and beyond.
