His study titled, Creating Value in Dairy: A Study of Small-Scale Milk Processing Firms in Gulu, explores the challenges faced by small-scale milk processors in the northern region of Uganda, specifically in Gulu. Dr. Mutumba's study is based on the concepts in Harvard Professor Michael Porter's Value Chain Model. According to Dr. Mutumba,Milk processing firms in Gulu face stiff competition from over 120 processing firms nationwide as well as from alternative beverages like soda, which calls for them to innovate and enhance their value propositions in order to deliver products that will continuously meet customers' expectations. Dr. Mutumba's study aims to help these firms improve their operations and profitability of their milk processing enterprises. The findings of his study underscore the importance of addressing key issues such as human resource competencies, equipment availability, and reliable sources of supplies in the dairy industry.
