Students from the Bachelor of Agrisystems Management Program at the University of the Sacred Heart Gulu recently embarked on an experiential learning trip to various farms in and around Gulu.
The first visit was to Mama Akera Farm in Bardege, Gulu City, known for its dairy farming and biogas production. Producing 15 liters of milk daily, Mama Akera’s farm exemplifies sustainable practices for smallholder farmers.
Next, the students visited God Mercy Dairy Farm in Akonyibedo, Gulu City. They learned about livestock management, hay production, piggery, and duck rearing, gaining insights into diverse animal husbandry practices.
The final stop was HOMA Farms Limited in Omel sub-county, Gulu district. This commercial and teaching farm features projects in poultry, piggery, livestock, and intensive crop farming, including maize, onions, cucumbers, eggplants, and soybeans.
Mr. Alfred Opiyo, a lecturer in the program emphasized the importance of these field work for understanding modern farming challenges and opportunities. "Experiential learning is crucial for our students to apply classroom knowledge in real-world scenarios," he said. Throughout the study trip, the students engaged directly with farm operations, gaining practical knowledge and skills that complement their academic studies. The hands-on experience reinforced classroom teachings and highlighted the importance of innovative and sustainable agricultural practices in enhancing food security and promoting economic development.
