The University of the Sacred Heart Gulu (USHG) is participating in a regional capacity-building workshop organized by the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) on Competence-Based Education and Training (CBET). The workshop is taking place at Lira University.
The training brings together public and private Higher Education Institutions from across Northern Uganda to strengthen institutional readiness for the transition to competence-based curriculum design, implementation, assessment, quality assurance, and accreditation.
The workshop focuses on the national shift towards CBET and its implications for higher education programmes. Participants are being guided on how academic programmes should be reviewed and redesigned to align with competence-based requirements, minimum standards, and national qualification frameworks.
During the training, NCHE emphasized that all academic programmes are expected to transition to the CBET model. Institutions were also reminded that programme review and accreditation processes will increasingly be guided by competence-based standards. This requires universities and other higher education institutions to clearly define graduate competencies, learning outcomes, teaching and learning strategies, assessment methods, notional hours, and evidence of learner achievement.

Strategic Importance for USHG
The training comes at an important time as USHG continues to review and strengthen its programmes, teaching approaches, assessment systems, and graduate outcomes. Through this engagement, the University is better positioned to align its programmes with national higher education standards and the evolving needs of learners, employers, communities, and the labour market.
The University appreciates NCHE for organizing the regional training and for supporting Higher Education Institutions in Northern Uganda to prepare for effective implementation of Competence-Based Education and Training.
